Water Scarcity & The Importance Of Water

Water (Water=H2O=Life) is the precious gift of God on the earth. Earth is the only known planet in this universe where life exists only. The reason is because of the availability of water and oxygen. There is no life on other planets so, it looks like a desert because they do not contain water and hence there is no life.

Water is a life giver - even a life creator. Water is a constant reminder that life repeats. It's the only element that has a visible cycle. The human body consists of 70% of water. While our earth’s surface consists of 71% of water and below the surface of the land, there is a saturated layer which is known as the water table.Three-fourth of the earth is covered by water from which 97% water is ocean water means salt water and completely unfit for our consumption. We have only left percentage of fresh water which is fit for human use. We also know that there is very less percentage of clean water means drinking water available on the earth.

A recent study has revealed that about 25% of urban population lacks the accessibility to fresh water. People face more problems during summer months when the daily need of water increases. The people living in rural areas or the people living in the area where there is a scarcity of water, they realize the importance of water as for just one bucket of water they need to cover a long. The situation of lack of water becomes very terrible for the people who don’t have enough water to fulfill their basic needs of drinking, bathing, washing, etc.

Clean water is a global issue which needs to be solved globally by increasing awareness about it among people worldwide. In some areas, lack of water is the daily problem. People have to suffer a lot the scarcity of water. It takes a lot of efforts, cost and time to manage the access of water to all especially in the areas of water scarcity.

Lack of water is a big issue in many countries. UNO Report, Pakistan is at the 7th position in the list of countries, which are facing water crisis & the world's fourth highest rate of water use.

According to the statistics published in the United Nations World Water Development Report 2018, the worldwide demand for water has been growing 1.0 percent per year as population growth. Statistics show that water scarcity currently will adversely affect Pakistan in the next couple of years because National Water Policy (NWP) of the country is not adopted. The Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) alerted the government that the country will run out of water by 2025 if no action is taken.

People working in different fields need water for different purposes such as farmers need water to grow crops, gardeners to water plants, industrialists for industry work, electricity plants to generate hydro-electricity, etc.

Facts and statistics

As we know the percentage of clean water was less but due to the use of dirty and polluted water an estimated 250,000 children in Pakistan under age of 5 years die every year due to water borne diseases (Cholera, Typhoid, Hepatitis A & E and Diarrhea). Water is one of the biggest sources in the spread of diseases. WHO reports that 25%-30% of all hospital admissions are connected to water borne bacterial and parasitic conditions with 60% of infant deaths caused by water borne infections. Most people, in the country, have only one water source. It may be a nearby river, pond, or rainwater from a catch basin or creek.

Typically the water source is used by both humans as well as animals. People use it for bathing, washing, laundry, as well as for drinking and cooking. Bacterial contamination is a result of leaking pipes and pollution from sewage pipes and rivers comes from the toxicity run off from the industry sector.

Because of the lack of fresh mineral water everywhere, it has been started selling on the local shops for many years. And, people are ready to buy it worth 30 to 35 Rs because they know that simple tap water may not be clean especially at the public places It’s time to join our hands together to save water as much as possible. Saving water and protective it from being dirty has been very necessary to meet current and future demand If we do not take positive action, the condition will be more embarrassing when the rate of lack of fresh water. We should bring many positive changes in our habits and activities to save even a drop of water.

World Water Day

To save water some action taken by UN or other agencies like, World Water Day is celebrated every year on 22nd of March by the people all across the world. It was first officially added in the schedule 21 of the year 1992 “United Nations Conference on Environment and Development” and celebration was started from the year 1993 to motivate the general public in order to get their support in water conservation by avoiding the use of their taps for whole day.

The main symbol of the World Water Day celebration is the shape of water drop of blue color.

We should make motto of “Save water, Save life”, because if we do not take any action regarding this matter increasing rate of people’s carelessness,  it is sure that our future generations must suffer the shortage of clean water & demands will increase in future, it should be saved to ensure its availability for future generations. It is an obligation upon all of us that we should save clean water for the healthy life of human being and conserve more water naturally and ensure the availability of it for future.

We should understand the importance of water in our life and stop misusing it, and also protect water from being dirty.
