Introduction - The Internet of Things (IoT)
The Internet of Things (IoT) is embedded part of the internet of future and can be defined as “Global networking infrastructure with self-configuring capabilities with interoperable communication protocols based on some standards where physical and virtual objects have identities, attributes, and physical personalities”. The broad concept associated with IoT is that “using of devices that are connected via network to provide certain functionality”. IoT is basically expanding the services of internet.
Back in 1999 Kevin Ashton first gave the concept of IoT but the exact definition of IoT is a process that is in accordance with perspective taken.
Features/Architecture of the Internet of Things (IoT)
IOT describe the coming generation of the internet where physical things can be accessed through the internet.
The range of hardware to support IOT is very wide but one platform is Raspberry Pi and the other is Arduino. Features of “IOT” include “Artificial intelligence”, “Architecture”, “Geo-localization”, “Size considerations” etc and technologies associated with it are “RFID”, “Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11”, “Barcode e QR Code”, “Zigbee IEEE 802.15.4” along with sensors and smartphones etc.
While considering architecture, things need to move and interact with one another in “IOT” so architecture should be adaptive to make things interact dynamically and to support communication. Decentralized and heterogeneous nature are also prime factors for “IoT (The Internet of Things)”.
The Internet of things generally called internet of objects is nothing but the physical communication of different objects communicating with each other that is either human to computer or computer to computer interaction. In short, we can say that IOT is able to interact without human interaction. We know that internet is the revolution of this era and with the concept of internet of things, the internet is becoming more favorable as it endorsing smart life to smart people of this era. The internet of things is changing everything thing around right from grass root level communication to high-level business and has an impact on future education. Unlocking the potential of “IOT” we will get improved performance with reduced cost, innovative services, and new revenue stream. Some may use the term industrial Internet rather than IOT because of applications of IoT in the manufacturing world.
Device provisioning is device management that is required in every IT system and is also applicable to IOT projects.
Why I selected this topic - The Internet of Things
I selected topic "The Internet of Things" because this topic has gained so much importance from researchers as well as humans of IT. Technology that is our future and that will give a smart life to a human being is so amazing yet complex but very interesting and it compelled me to write on this topic. Anything that helps in bringing clarity, logic and futuristic goals is a good thing to work on so that while choosing it for profession homework is preset.
Ethical and security issues
IOT has connected household items, automobiles will provide a way to smart cities, healthcare, garbage management and monitoring. This emerging technology also includes data mining on data to predict human behavior. So don’t you think this proactive aspect of a technological foundation is exposed to many ethical issues? and if IOT introduces ethical quandaries than is it possible to live in an era of evolving technology by avoiding information of technology (IOT)?
An industry where every vendor is hasting towards next innovative gadget to fight competitor than in this type of circumstance functionality became the main focus while security has given a back set. The fact that “IOT” applications can access multiple administrative domains, a framework is required to establish confidence that information and services being exchanges are confidential and protected and for that lightweight key management system is used to enable encryption using minimum communication and processing resources. IOT also needs to be operated without human control i.e. it can be operated virtually for more data security and privacy.
Importance of Internet of Things
IOT promotes high-level awareness about our world and enable applications from micro to macro, and from simple to critical. While talking about the importance of any technology critical things are considered first so some highly appreciated brainy ideas that are already in the development phase of IOT are:
Natural disaster management system.
The accurate predicting ability of forest fire before they exaggerate limit and other natural disasters like earthquake, mudslides, and avalanches.
Urban management system.
A system that effectively manages the ever-changing traffic condition of countries. Useful parking application for guiding cars to open spots hence saving time and energy.
Smart healthcare management system.
Devices that are wearable and that detect post health issues and those that administer life-saving and deploy emergency response instantly to the concerned person. This idea provides a sustainable legacy for future generations.
In the last few years IOT is in trend and has been developed rapidly. Diverse needs of people require “IOT” to be adapted and implemented for different situations, needs, and preferences. Future of “IOT (The Internet of Things)” is also very bright as from our utility bills to transportation things would be connected in a better way providing better lifestyle.
